Part 1. Style

A. Content

All-Site Style

Remove all double spacing (use Find/Replace).

Unfamiliar aspects of UC Style to note well:

Personal Titles (UC Style)—No titles are ever used, except when referring to medical doctors: Richard Anthes, Anthes (not Dr. Anthes) but David Hamburg, M.D., Dr. Hamburg.

Featured Scientist

Acronyms—No spellout of NCAR, UCAR, or UOP required. Avoid other acronymns for less than three mentions.

Names—Use first name/nickname plus last name, then first name/nickname alone after first use: Beth Holland, Beth; Mickey Glantz, Mickey, Tim Killeen, Tim. (Staff Notes Style)

Provide firstname plus nickname on first use for unfamiliar nicknames: William "Al" Cooper, Al; Randolph "Stick" Ware; Stick.

Publications list—most recent two years of pubs, with max of 12 total.

Feature Story

Names—Use formal first name plus last name, then last name without title, after first use. (Quarterly Style)

Our Research

Emphasis—Add boldface to key words within sections (e.g., chaos effect

Links—Think in terms of the Web rather than print and link as often as possible to existing phrases within the narrative, deleting unneceessary text in parens whenever possible.

Add links using MSWord's ALT + K feature.

Avoid print-based landmarks such as "see below."

It's possible to have a word or phrase both boldfaced and linked .

Models —Add acronym after full spellout if not obvious; always link from acronym:

The Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF )

Satellites —Acronym can go first or after spellout; again, link from acronym, not spellout.
